Why Serbian ultranationalists are siding with Iran

Several far-right groups on the Telegram platform follow and comment on the war in the Middle East almost daily, and most of them support the leadership in Iran.

The conservative "Nashi" movement, an ultra-right group that does not hide its ties to Russia, held a protest in Belgrade in support of the people of Iran, while some groups on Telegram repeatedly called on Tehran to bomb the US Bondsteel military base in Kosovo.

"The narrative that is being spread on these channels is mainly an expression of a strong anti-Western and anti-NATO discourse that has long been present among a part of the Serbian right," Hikmet Karčić, a research associate at the Institute for Crime Research at the University of Sarajevo, told Radio Free Europe.

The US and Israel launched airstrikes against Iran on February 28, killing Iran's supreme religious leader, Ali Khamenei, and other senior officials.

The conflict spread to other countries in the Middle East, as Tehran launched drones and missiles towards Israel and the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, where the US has military bases.

Serbian mercenary as "geopolitical analyst"

The Telegram channel of Dejan Berić – a Serbian citizen who fought for a time in Ukraine on the side of Russia – regularly posts about developments in the Middle East since the beginning of the Israeli and American attacks on Iran.

Beriq, whose channel has more than 102,000 followers, mainly posts Kremlin propaganda about the war in Ukraine, but has focused on Iran since February 28.

His posts share statements from Iranian officials and footage of the bombing of Israeli cities.

Under the title "A Million Dollar Proposal," the channel aired part of a statement from Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps on March 10, calling on Arab countries to expel American and Israeli diplomats in exchange for Iran allowing them "full and free passage through the Strait of Hormuz."

On the same day, Beriq wrote on Telegram that the American company Planet Labs has expanded restrictions on access to its footage from the Middle East, to prevent adversaries from using it to attack the United States and its allies.

As reported by the news agency Reuters, Planet Labs – which operates a large fleet of Earth-imaging satellites and sells updated images to governments, companies and the media – notified customers on March 9 that the four-day delay introduced last week would be extended to a period of 14 days.

In his post, Beric claimed that the measure was not introduced "to prevent Iranians from obtaining information, but, rather, to prevent Americans from seeing how devastated they are."

"Don't worry - the Chinese and Russians are providing real-time images," Beric wrote.

Berić is being tried before the Supreme Court in Belgrade for participating in a war in a foreign country. However, he is unavailable to Serbian authorities, having been in Russia since 2014.

Call to attack Bondsteel

Among the channels that regularly share posts about events in the Middle East is “Rebellion is a State of Mind.”

This Telegram channel – with more than 80,000 followers – has called on Iran several times to fire missiles at Bondsteel, the largest US military base located in Kosovo.

In these posts, "Bunt" also released the coordinates of Bondsteel, along with a link showing its location on Google Maps.

The coordinates of the Bondsteel camp or calls for its bombing were also published by other right-wing pro-Russian channels, such as: "Сербский Вестник", "Srpska Sparta Info", "Bunker", which together have more than 50,000 followers.

Karčić, from the University of Sarajevo, believes that far-right groups do not necessarily see Iran as an ideological ally, but rather as a state that opposes the United States and its Western allies.

"This is why he is often presented as part of a broader fight against American influence in the world," says Karcic.

At the same time, he adds, these groups try to link global conflicts to local issues, mainly Kosovo.

"The Bondsteel base is also mentioned in this context. It is a combination of local narratives and a broader ideological framework, which has been strongly promoted in recent years, through pro-Russian and ultraconservative networks," says Karçiç, adding:

“The local elements are mainly anti-NATO sentiments and the Kosovo issue, while the broader narrative about the global war against the West is largely taken from the transnational right-wing discourse promoted by actors linked to Russia, including the networks around the Russian oligarch, Konstantin Malofeev.”

A few days ago, on March 6, the thesis that Bondsteel could be the target of an attack was also published in the pro-regime Belgrade newspaper "Večernje novosti".

The pro-Russian channel "Koridor", which is followed by just over 11,000 people, wrote on the day the war began, February 28, that it "would not broadcast news about this war unless there was some important news, such as the Bondsteel strike."

Protest in support of Iran in Belgrade

"We, Serbs, stand with the people of Iran and with all freedom-loving peoples around the world."

This was stated by Ivan Ivanovic, leader of the right-wing Conservative Movement "Nashi" at a rally in support of Iran on March 7 in Belgrade.

After the media announced that Iran had officially elected Mojtaba Khamenei as Ayatollah, the channel congratulated Iran's new supreme leader and wished him "wisdom, perseverance and courage in the fight against Israel."

Support for Tehran as part of the anti-Western narrative

According to Karčić, in the perception of these groups, the West and the liberal order represent the main adversary, and all actors in conflict with the West are seen as tactical allies.

"Therefore, support for Iran does not stem from proximity to the Iranian theocracy, but from a broader anti-Western geopolitical narrative. At the same time, a distinction is made between support for a state that opposes the West and a hostile attitude towards migrants from Muslim countries – which allows them to reconcile these seemingly contradictory positions in public discourse," says Karcic.

According to Iranian authorities, nearly 10,000 civilian objects have been bombed in the two-week war in the country, killing more than 1,300 civilians.

The Pentagon said about 140 American service members have been injured and seven have been killed since the start of the attack on Iran.

In Israel, two soldiers and 11 civilians have been killed.

In Lebanon, according to the Ministry of Health, at least 486 people have been killed by Israeli attacks.

At least 15 people have been killed in separate incidents in Iraq, including the killing of a military commander in an airstrike. /Rel
