US Attorney General: I will not allow the Department of Justice to be used as a

United States Attorney General Merrick Garland said Thursday that he will not allow the Justice Department to be "used as a political weapon" as he denounced "conspiracy theories" and "dangerous lies" that target federal agencies. of law enforcement.

During a meeting in Washington with US attorneys and other members of the Justice Department, Mr. Garland strongly defended the department's integrity and impartiality in the face of Republican claims of the politicization of justice.

Mr. Garland said the rules that protect the department from political interference are now more important than ever.

"Our norms are a promise that we will not allow this department to be used as a political weapon. Our norms are a promise that we will not allow this country to become a state where justice is treated as a branch of politics ," said Mr. Garland during the meeting in the meeting room of the Department of Justice.

The US attorney general's comments come amid a flurry of accusations from Republicans who claim the Justice Department is being used politically against former President Donald Trump. Two separate charges have been brought against Republican Donald Trump by special prosecutor Jack Smith, who Mr. Garland brought in from outside the Justice Department to lead the investigation.

Mr Trump has vowed that if the November elections return him to the White House, he will "completely reform" what he has called the "corrupt Department of Justice".

Through an article on the X network, the Republican Trump has also threatened that: "I will imprison all those involved in illegal actions at the polls and that they will face long prison sentences so that this destruction of justice should not be repeated".

Attorney General Garland did not mention Mr. Trump or Republicans by name during his speech. But he condemned what he described as "cruel" attacks that he says put law enforcement agencies at risk.

"The attacks have taken the form of conspiracy theories, dangerous lies, attempts to harass and intimidate career employees by repeatedly and publicly singling them out, and threats of violence,"  Mr Garland said.  "Through your continued work, you have made it clear that the Department of Justice will not be intimidated by these attacks."

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has repeatedly used social media to attack Mr. Smith, other prosecutors and the judges hearing cases against him.

Republicans have also raised allegations without providing evidence that the case brought in New York, where Mr Trump was found guilty in May of 34 charges, was orchestrated by Democratic President Joe Biden and the Justice Department.

When he took office, Mr. Garland pledged to repair the Justice Department's reputation for political independence after four turbulent years under President Trump's administration.

But he has faced a barrage of criticism over his department's handling of politically sensitive issues, including investigations into Hunter Biden, President Biden's son, who pleaded guilty last week to evasion charges. fiscal in a case brought by another special prosecutor.

Chief Prosecutor Garland said that Justice Department employees have made it clear through their work that they "do not bow to political pressure" and that they "will not give in to pressure."

"We must treat similar cases equally. There is not one rule for friends and another for enemies, one rule for the powerful and another for the powerless, one rule for the rich and another for the poor, one rule for the Democrats and another for the Republicans, or different rules depending on of race or ethnicity,"  Mr. Garland said.

"On the contrary, we have only one rule: we are based on facts and apply the law in accordance with the Constitution and civil liberties"./VOA
