The director of the largest prison in Ecuador is killed

The director of Ecuador's largest prison in Guayaquil, a detention center often the scene of bloody inmate uprisings, was killed on Thursday, the Latin American country's penitentiary service (SNAI) said.

"Director of Detention Center No. 1 of Guyanese, Maria Daniela Icasa Resabala, died after being attacked by armed men in the street," her agency said, adding that the official died in hospital.

The incident happened on the road to Daule, (September 12) at a time of heavy traffic on the road north of Guayaquil, writes Eluniverso.

Icaza Resabala was traveling in a red car when he was shot. She was traveling with a service worker, who was injured.

The Zone Police confirmed the killing of the official. "Given the murder of the director of the prison María Icaza, our police personnel are already on the scene starting the investigations that will allow finding the persons responsible", he said.

Prison No. 1 of Guayas has often been marred by gang conflicts and bloody riots in recent years. In total, over 460 prisoners have been killed inside Ecuadorian prisons since 2021.
