Chinese scientists have unveiled a new plan to protect Earth from potentially dangerous asteroids, proposing the use of space probes and a controlled nuclear explosion to destroy them before they approach the planet.
According to the project, designed by researchers at the China Rocket Research Institute in Beijing, the mission would be carried out in two stages. First, a probe would hit the asteroid to create a crater on its surface. Then, a second probe would place a nuclear bomb at that point, which would explode the asteroid from the inside.
Scientists estimate that the explosion would have a power of about three megatons, equivalent to about 200 Hiroshima atomic bombs. According to them, this method would be most effective for large asteroids or those discovered very late.
The plan follows NASA's DART mission in 2022, which proved it was possible to deflect an asteroid's trajectory by hitting it with a probe. However, Chinese researchers argue that this approach is not enough for very large objects, so a controlled nuclear explosion may be a more effective alternative.
In recent years, China has increased its investment in planetary defense. In June, it unveiled plans for a national asteroid early warning network, and since 2018, it has been part of international networks for monitoring and planning missions against threats from space.
