United States President Donald Trump has clashed with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over a shortage of ammunition that, according to a Washington Post report, is limiting Washington's military options against Iran.

Citing two people familiar with the conversation, the American newspaper writes that the confrontation took place on Friday at Camp David, where Trump held Hegseth accountable for the low weapons stockpiles, expressing surprise at why he had been led to believe that the problem had been resolved.

According to sources, the lack of long-range missiles and air defense interceptors has been one of the reasons Trump has given up on further major attacks on Iran in recent days.

The president declared on Monday that he had ordered and then called off the "largest attack since World War II" while awaiting new developments regarding negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz.

The report notes that, although the United States has signed new agreements for the production of munitions, including Patriot missiles, their production could take up to two years.

During the first month of the conflict, the US military used over 850 Tomahawk cruise missiles, more than 1,000 Patriot and THAAD missiles, as well as over 1,300 ATACMS tactical missiles. According to the newspaper's sources, ATACMS missile stocks are now almost exhausted.

The lack of interceptors has also affected support for Ukraine, which, according to the article, is facing a shortage of air defense systems, while Western reserves are increasingly limited.
