Humanity has been living "in debt" to the planet for a week now.

July 30 marked Earth Overshoot Day for 2026, the moment when all the natural resources that the planet can regenerate in a year have been consumed.

This means that by the end of the year, the world will be relying on natural reserves, using more than the Earth is able to recover.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, the current rate of consumption is equivalent to using 1.73 planet Earths.

Experts warn that this ecological deficit has been deepening for more than five decades. The ever-increasing demand for natural resources, combined with limited regeneration capacity, is putting continuous pressure on ecosystems and accelerating their degradation.

Cities have a crucial role in this challenge.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, urban areas, although they occupy only 3 percent of the Earth's surface, consume about 75 percent of global energy and are responsible for nearly 70 percent of greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activity.

As urban populations grow, experts emphasize that investments in clean transportation, energy-efficient buildings, and more sustainable use of resources will be crucial to slowing the pace of consumption and reducing the ecological debt to the planet.
