He stabbed 18 people in Hamburg, the 39-year-old woman is suspected of suffering

The perpetrator of the stabbing attack at the Hamburg train station shows "clear signs of mental illness", German police announced, ruling out the possibility of a politically motivated attack.

The suspect, a 39-year-old German woman, will appear before a judge who will decide whether to send her to a psychiatric institution, police said in a statement.

"There is no indication that the suspect was under the influence of psychotropic substances (alcohol or drugs) at the time of the act," the statement said.

According to the German newspaper Bild, a total of 18 people were injured in the attack. Four of the injured have been hospitalized in critical condition.
