Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani was seriously injured in a car accident in New Hampshire on Saturday night, a representative said.

Giuliani, 81, was hospitalized with a vertebral fracture and multiple cuts and bruises, including injuries specifically to his left arm and lower leg, after his rental car was hit from behind, spokesman Michael Ragusa said on Sunday.

"Mayor Giuliani was alerted by a woman who was a victim of domestic violence before the accident. He offered assistance and contacted 911, staying at the scene until the officers who attended arrived to ensure her safety," said Ragusa, Giuliani's head of security.
