Von der Leyen: Europe has a clear plan to send troops to Ukraine

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has told the Financial Times that Europe already has a "fairly precise" plan to send troops to Ukraine, as part of efforts to ensure the country's security in the fight against Russian aggression.

In the interview, von der Leyen emphasized that security guarantees for Ukraine remain an absolute priority for the European Union. She also underlined that former US President Donald Trump has assured European partners of some form of American presence as part of a "backstop" agreement for Ukraine - a commitment that, according to her, has been repeated several times.

Despite the doubts recently raised about Washington's stance and close transatlantic coordination, von der Leyen has affirmed that there is a concrete plan of action, in cooperation with the US, for the next steps in the region.

Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported that a high-level meeting is expected to be held on Thursday in Paris, between British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, new NATO chief Mark Rutte and von der Leyen himself.

This comes after the summit held earlier this month in Washington, where Western allies expressed a more optimistic tone about a possible solution to the conflict in Ukraine.

However, in the face of persistent obstacles from Russia, Europe is trying to maintain diplomatic and military momentum, at a time when the need for strategic coordination is more critical than ever.
