Albanian parties in North Macedonia have joined in the demand for the removal of the definition of the Albanian language in the country's Constitution as a language spoken by at least 20 percent of the population.
The Albanian parties demand that the change be made during the opening of the Constitution for the introduction of the Bulgarian minority as an ethnic group, which is a prerequisite for the continuation of North Macedonia's journey to the EU.
The acting chairman of the Alliance for Albanians, Arben Taravari, requests a meeting of leaders between the Albanian parties to make a joint official request.
"We consider that at the moment we should talk with experts, competent people and ambassadors, to get opinions. We have time until the constitutional changes, the voting, and we will present them when we think it will be more reasonable", said Taravari.
Ali Ahmeti, chairman of the Democratic Union for Integration, supports the request for constitutional changes, but is skeptical due to the insufficient numbers of the majority to vote them in the Parliament.
"20% is a compromise that was made in 2001, in order not to violate the substance of the Ohrid Peace Agreement. All those who tried to contribute to peace and the achievement of this Agreement assured us, but we were also aware, as well as the political parties with whom I was in permanent communication at that time, that the substance of the agreement is not violated and the rights are not violated and the advancement of Albanians", he emphasized.
Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski said that the Constitution is being opened to speed up the path to the EU, and did not clarify whether he supports the request of the Albanian parties.
For the opening of the Constitution in accordance with the Agreement with Bulgaria, 80 votes are needed, numbers which the parliamentary majority and the Albanian opposition do not have at the moment. Constitutional amendments are blocked by VMRO DPMNE and E Majta, which oppose without first receiving guarantees from the EU that Bulgaria will not issue new conditions for North Macedonia.
