The BESA party wins the elections in Tetovo

The Besa movement has won the election for the municipal assembly in the city of Tetova in North Macedonia, in the elections that were held on August 20.

This party, which is led by the mayor of Tetova, Bilall Kasami, has won over the Democratic Union for Integration of Ali Ahmeti, a party that is part of the government of the social democratic prime minister, Dimitar Kovacevski.

The extraordinary elections in this municipality, with a dominant Albanian population located in the western part of the country, were held due to problems in its functioning due to political instability and the inability to approve the final annual budget report, which according to the law on local self-government is mandatory, otherwise the municipal assembly is dissolved.

The municipal council in Tetovo has 31 councilors and according to the preliminary results of the State Election Commission, the Besa movement won over 30 percent of the votes from about 27 thousand citizens who went to the polls. The Democratic Union for Integration won 25 percent of the votes. In third place is the VMRO DPMNE, then the SDSM, the Albanian Democratic Party, the Alternative and the Alliance for Albanians.

"The citizens of Tetovo, regardless of ethnic, poetic or religious affiliation, voted on Sunday for the continuation of the change in Tetovo, for the development of the city, where the youth will have a future and a perspective", stated Bilall Kasami, chairman of the BESA Movement.

The head of DUI, Ali Ahmeti has accepted the defeat of his party in these elections, stressing that for him more important than victory is democratization and the rule of law in North Macedonia.

"Processes are important for us, more important is that we continue to invest in democratic standards, in the rule of law and the rule of law", Ahmeti declared.

VMRO DPMNE has announced the victory over SDSM in Tetovo with the result of 3 to 1 and has demanded early parliamentary elections since according to the deputy of this party Vllatko Gjorčev "in Tetovo the power of SDSM-BDI has been delegitimized".

In addition to Tetovo, on Sunday elections were also held in two small municipalities, Zhupë and Mavrovë-Rostushë, where there was no mayor due to not reaching the threshold for voting in the 2021 elections. These two municipalities were won from the Social Democratic League.

Sunday's elections, in particular those in Tetovo as one of the largest municipalities in North Macedonia, are seen as a test for the parties in power and after the victory of the BESA movement in the Albanian electorate and VMRO DPMNE in the Macedonian electorate, the demand is expected to increase of the opposition for early parliamentary elections.
