Russian and Iranian hackers are targeting British journalists and politicians to steal sensitive data, the UK's National Cyber ​​Security Center (NCSC) has warned.

"These campaigns are led by individuals based in Russia and Iran who relentlessly pursue their targets to compromise potentially sensitive systems," said NCSC official Paul Chichester.

The announcement mentions Russia-based SEABORGIUM and Iran-based TA453, which is linked to the Revolutionary Guard. Although the two campaigns are separate, the two groups "use similar techniques and have similar goals."

"The attacks do not target the general public, but specific sectors, mainly in the academic world, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, politicians, journalists, activists", the NCSC emphasizes.

"They create fake social media profiles posing as experts and use fake invitations or similar events."

According to the NCSC, the Iranian group TA453 used the Zoom platform.

"We strongly recommend that organizations and individuals remain alert to potential approaches and follow advice to protect themselves from such attacks," warns Chichester.

The NCSC recommends the use of complex passwords and heightened vigilance to limit the risk of hacking.
