Croatia's Prime Minister, Andrej Plenkovic, has issued a strong warning about the political situation in the Western Balkans, declaring that "Serbia is on the brink of civil war," after more than two years of internal unrest and mass protests.

He made this statement at the Bled Strategic Forum, while discussing on a panel with his counterparts from Slovenia, Albania, and Montenegro.

Plenkovic stressed that the political reality in the region is harsh and must be taken seriously by the European Union before any further enlargement.

"You have North Macedonia, which is blocked. You have Serbia with more than two years of internal unrest and demonstrations, on the verge of civil war. You have Bosnia and Herzegovina with Dodik, who has been toying with the idea of secession for years. You have Banjska in 2023, for which the EU did not articulate any serious position, as if it did not happen. This is the reality," he said, according to Zagreb's Večernji list.

Plenkovic added that he is in favor of EU expansion, but according to him, aspiring countries must first stabilize politically.

"We need to be realistic about enlargement and the changing global context. Everyone wants to join the EU, but they need to have political stability," the Croatian prime minister said.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of citizens in Serbia's capital, Belgrade, participated in a commemorative march on September 1 during an anti-government protest called by high school students as part of a blockade on the first day of the school year.

The rally ended at Republic Square, in central Belgrade, with the laying of wreaths and white roses for the 16 victims of the collapse of the railway station shelter in Novi Sad. A 16-minute silence was also held in honor of the victims.

The reason for this protest, which was held in several cities in Serbia, was the fact that it has been ten months since the collapse of the shelter, an incident that led to mass protests in Serbia and blockades of higher education institutions. There were calls for early elections, transparent investigations into those responsible for the incident, as well as free institutions and media.
