Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, is gaining more and more support among American Democrats, thanks to an unusual strategy: he is using social media to attack and mock Donald Trump and his inner circle, in the same way that Trump mocks his opponents.

According to the latest polls, Newsom is the most popular Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential election. He has taken the lead with 25% of support, leaving behind Pete Buttigieg and Kamala Harris, who have fallen in the polls.

"La Repubblica" writes that his success is related to the way he is confronting Trump, with sarcasm, irony and memes circulating on social networks.

One of the most talked about memes was a photo created with artificial intelligence, where Newsom appeared as a king on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine, instead of US First Lady Melania Trump.

In one case, he appears as a gladiator alongside Melania, while in another meme, the one who fell into Newsom's "traps" was Trump's daughter, Ivanka, while the president himself appeared in a ridiculous way: in a swimsuit, round and with pink skin.

Among the most recent memes, one shows the governor with an Oscar statuette and the inscription "Nobel Peace Prize," mocking the president's obsession with the award.

But beyond the humor, Newsom is sending a serious message: Democrats must learn to fight with the same strength and courage as their Republican opponents. This approach has been embraced by other governors, such as those of Illinois and Maryland, who are responding with irony to Trump's threats to send National Guard troops to their states.

Many Democrats feel disappointed by their representatives in Washington, who seem passive and afraid to take a stand. Meanwhile, in states like California and even Texas (a Republican state), new figures like Newsom and James Talarico are showing that there may be a new style of political warfare: more direct, bolder, and closer to the people.
