"We deepen cooperation, welcome Russian companies", Vucic meets Putin

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, stated during the meeting with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, that cooperation at the highest level with Moscow in all areas is very important for Belgrade. As he has refused to impose sanctions on Russia for more than three years due to its aggression against Ukraine, Vucic especially emphasized Belgrade's cooperation with Moscow in the field of energy and Russian gas supply.

"I hope that we will have the opportunity not only to maintain it, but also to improve some aspects of cooperation. Energy is a very important area for us and gas supply is very important to us," Vucic said during the meeting with Putin in Beijing, China, according to Serbia's public broadcaster.

The two leaders were invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is organizing a military parade in Beijing to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. At the parade on September 3, Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and more than 24 other heads of state and government, including those from Belarus, Iran and other countries, are expected to stand next to Xi.

During the meeting with Putin, Vucic stated that thanks to the oil pipeline that he will build together with Hungary, Serbia will be able to improve cooperation with Russia in the field of energy.

"All Russian companies are welcome, all those who wish to participate in infrastructure projects in Serbia," the Serbian president said.

At the beginning of the meeting with Putin, Vucic emphasized that Serbia has not imposed any sanctions on the Russian Federation and that it will maintain its neutrality in the future.

"I want to inform you that Serbia since the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine has been in a difficult situation and under great pressure. However, we have managed to maintain our position and defend Serbia's independence," Vucic stressed.

Despite criticism and calls from the European Union, where Serbia aims to join, Belgrade since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has not imposed sanctions on Russia and refuses to harmonize with Brussels' foreign policy.

Vucic thanked Putin for the meeting and for the hospitality in Moscow in May this year - where he attended the military parade organised by Russia for the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

"Let me express my great gratitude to you, for your respect and support in preserving the territorial integrity of Serbia, as well as to thank you for your friendly attitude towards the Serbian people," Vucic declared.

Serbia counts on Russia's support to oppose Kosovo's independence, which it considers part of its territory, as well as the country's membership in international organizations.

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, said that Moscow respects the independent orientation that Serbia has under Vucic's leadership.

"The strategic partnership of Russia and Serbia brings positive results for both Moscow and Belgrade. We are ready to work together. I hope we will be able to discuss economic cooperation in more detail," Putin said.

He emphasized that by the end of the year, another meeting of the Joint Committee on Trade, Economic and Scientific-Technical Cooperation between Serbia and the Russian Federation will be held. During the visit to Beijing, in addition to meeting with Putin and participating in the large military parade, Vucic will also meet with Chinese President Xi, as well as with senior officials and representatives of large companies, the Serbian Presidency announced. Official Belgrade has maintained ties with regimes in Russia, China, Belarus, Venezuela and Iran for years and has faced criticism from the European Union for this./REL
