Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, the Vatican has announced.

The Pope was in Rome, at Casa Santa Marta, where he had been transferred after being admitted to the Gemelli hospital. Yesterday, Easter Sunday, he had wanted to participate in the celebrations of the Mass and appeared in the loggia of St. Peter's for the Urbi et Orbi blessing.

The Pope, who was the Bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church, became Pope in 2013 after his predecessor Benedict XVI resigned.

In recent years, his papacy had been marked by several hospital visits and concerns about his health.

On February 14, the Pope was hospitalized for treatment of bronchitis.
