A frightening cloud of dust covered Imerovigli in Santorini on Sunday, when a piece of land suddenly collapsed under the feet of residents and tourists who watched the horrified scene, snatching everything in its path.
Fortunately, there were no injuries, as construction works were being carried out in the much-coveted area.
The video, recorded by residents and provided by Greek media, captures the dramatic moments and highlights the serious risks posed by overbuilding in a geologically unstable area and also threatened by seismic tremors.
Within seconds, the entire area was shrouded in a dense veil of dust, with residents and tourists watching in horror as the collapse occurred.
According to experts who rushed to the scene, the specific piece of land is already particularly burdened by intensive construction activity and is classified as a high-risk area.
"Santorini is an island with a vulnerable geomorphology, and when the pressure of the overbuilding is increased, the risk of landslides is multiplied," they point out, sounding the alarm. "Immediate measures are needed to limit construction activity and strict controls, in order to protect both the environment and human life."
Only at the beginning of the year, residents were forced to temporarily abandon their homes for fear of the big earthquake that lasted for days and caused damage, which shows how fragile the balance on the island is.
