Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has reiterated his opposition to Ukraine's membership in NATO.
Through a post on X, Fico writes: "When, since the beginning of the war, I rejected Ukraine's membership in NATO as a fundamental precondition to end the conflict, I was publicly crucified. Today, the fact that Ukraine will not be in NATO is already taken for granted.""
In addition to the article, he has also published a three-minute video, where he emphasizes that in order to achieve peace in the end, it must be accepted that the country cannot become a member of NATO.
Fico is one of the European leaders most critical of Western involvement in the Ukraine-Russia war and has categorically opposed sending their weapons or troops to help Kyiv. However, according to a Politico article published just a day ago, private Slovak arms companies are profiting millions, while Fico seems to spread the Kremlin's narrative in Europe.
In 2024, Slovakia's arms exports increased to 1.15 billion euros. That's about 1 percent of the country's economy, double the 2023 scale and 10 times the amount since before Russia launched its full-scale invasion against Ukraine in 2022.
