Apocalyptic scenes from Italy, roads submerged and trees uprooted

A wave of powerful storms has affected several areas of northern Italy, flooding Milan and causing fears for the life of a person who was swept away by the waters in the Piedmont region.

Meanwhile, a river burst its banks in Val di Suza, collapsing two bridges, blocking provincial roads and isolating around 50 people in two villages.

It is the two most affected regions, that of Lombardy and that of Veneto, where there were floods that caused damage in the city of Milan, where some metro services were interrupted due to the waters.

Scientists warn that the climate crisis is increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, such as heat waves, droughts and floods.

They say storms are becoming more violent because warmer air can hold more moisture.

The south of Italy, meanwhile, has recently suffered from a severe drought, which has caused problems in agriculture and tourism, especially in the island of Sicily, but also in Sardinia.
