Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Thursday that if he wins the Nov. 5 election, he will create a government efficiency commission headed by billionaire  Elon Musk .

During a speech in which he laid out his economic vision for the country, Trump, speaking at the Economic Club of New York, also pledged to lower corporate tax rates for companies that manufacture domestically, create "low-tax" zones ” on federal land where construction companies will be encouraged to build new homes and start a sovereign wealth fund.

Trump had discussed the idea of an efficiency commission with aides for weeks. But for the first time he articulated the idea publicly on Thursday.

It was also the first time Trump said Musk had agreed to lead the Commission. Trump did not provide details on how such a commission would work, except to say it would develop a plan to eliminate " fraud and improper payments " within six months of its creation.

" I will create a government efficiency commission charged with conducting a full financial and performance audit of the entire federal government ," Trump told an audience that included Trump's former treasury secretary, Steve Mnuchin, and financiers Scott Bessent and John Paulson.

Musk said in an Aug. 19 podcast that he had had conversations with the former president about the commission and that he would be interested in serving on it.
