Pakistan's Punjab province declared a health emergency due to toxic smog, halting construction, closing schools for a week and moving universities online as hundreds of thousands of Muslims prayed for rain and forgiveness.

Worshipers gathered at more than 600 government-run mosques in the province for Namaz-e-Istisqa, a voluntary prayer for rain often offered in times of disaster, Talha Mahmood, spokesman for the provincial Religious Affairs department, said Reuters.

"Today, we prayed for rain to reduce the smog, although it is caused by people's own mistakes," said Muhammad Ejaz, 48, who led prayers at a mosque in the sprawling provincial capital of Lahore, adding the prayer aims to ask God's forgiveness for people's sins.

The province, Pakistan's most populous, faces smog every winter, but air pollution has worsened in recent years as a result of dust trapped by cold air, fumes from low-grade diesel and smoke from illegal stubble burning. in the fields.

Sajid Bashir, spokesman for the provincial Department of Environment, attributed this year's heavy pollution to a lack of rain in September and October. "Last year, periods of rain reduced the particles; this year we are still waiting," he said on Friday.

Lahore has topped Swiss group IQAir's (air quality) list as the world's most polluted city for most of the week.

Punjab Chief Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, announcing the measures to reduce smog at a press conference, said the government had ordered the closure of construction, brick kilns and kiln-based factories in Lahore and Multan city.
