Osmani: Serbia cooperates with the Wagner group, it is trying to destabilize us

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, during her stay in Italy, where she met with President Sergio Mattarella and Pope Francis, gave an interview to the Italian newspaper "Corriere Della Sera".

Among many topics, President Osmani spoke about Kosovo's relations with Serbia, the activities of the Wagner Group in the Balkans, the Special Court and, above all, the final agreement with the Serbian state.

Osmani told the Italian media that Belgrade is trying to destabilize Kosovo, while adding that Kosovo's membership in NATO is essential.

President Vjosa Osmani, a quarter of a century after the bombings, fifteen years after independence, why is Kosovo still on the verge of war with Serbia?

"I would not say that it was Kosovo that fell into the abyss of these tensions. And it cannot be said that the aggressor and the victim are on the same level. It is the same country that fought wars in the 1990s that is causing problems again. Unfortunately, Serbia is led by those who served Milosevic in the 1990s and have the same territorial claims as then: they have only changed their strategy. "Serbia considers Kosovo, Bosnia, Montenegro as provisional states to be destroyed, it wants to destabilize them," Osmani said.

The youngest president of the youngest European state, Vjosa Osmani, has been facing one of the most dangerous crises in the Balkans for several months. Serbian barricades, mobilized special forces, troops on the border, shooting at NATO troops. Opposite, the eternal enemy. And in the background, she is convinced, someone else far more dangerous:

"The hegemonic mentality of Belgrade is very similar to the approach taken by Russia, when it believes it is returning to the imperial era and taking territories from neighboring countries. And Serbia plays according to Putin's scheme. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has not made money for peace, we saw it with Milosevic in the early 1990s, when some considered him a peacemaker. Democratic countries must send a clear message to Belgrade: they will not allow the region to go to the brink of another conflict. Because of this, NATO's presence is extremely important. Russia wants to shift the West's attention to the Western Balkans, to take it away from Ukraine. And Serbia threatens its security by using forces cooperating with the Wagner Group,

What evidence do you have?

'I cannot give details because it is classified information. But we work with our Western allies to ensure that these Wagner-linked paramilitaries fail in their plan to destabilize Kosovo.'

But why has the crisis erupted again right now?'For some reasons. First of all, Russian influence in Serbia is growing: Belgrade has given the green light for the opening of so-called Russian humanitarian centers, which according to the US are nothing more than espionage centers and have turned the border with Kosovo into a haven for those which are under European sanctions. The second reason has to do with the northern Kosovo gangs paid, supported, instigated, armed by Vučić: Serbian criminals who have long been on the blacklists of the USA and Great Britain, the so-called Balkan mafia and who does not like the determination with which we are fighting him and therefore uses violence against us. Serbia is using the role of the victim, it is both an arsonist and a firefighter: first it uses these gangs to destabilize us, then it goes around talking about peace".

However, the Kosovar Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, said that an agreement with the Serbs would be possible?

'From our point of view, it is. But it takes two to dance a tango. And Serbia for now only wants to create crisis after crisis'.

You come from Mitrovica, the most problematic city..

"There, what Belgrade is doing with the Serbs is identical to what Moscow did in 2014 in Ukraine: agitating a minority, saying it is moving for humanitarian reasons, and then annexing it."

What did you think when Putin, a year ago, compared the invasion of Donbass to NATO's intervention in Kosovo?

"The only comparable thing is the crimes of Vucic and Putin. The international community intervened in Kosovo to stop an ongoing genocide, while in Ukraine there was no genocide to give the right to take territory. This is the big difference. What happened in 1999, a democratic power came to fight against tyranny, is something that Putin does not accept. For him, Kosovo is a historical mistake. Instead it is a democracy and a free economy that respects rights and peace. Russia does not believe in these values, fighting Kosovo means fighting these values".

But the rights of the Serbian minority are often violated.

"Because of my friendship with her, when I read her decision, I was honestly shocked. But I don't think he left because of stress or too many public and private roles. I assure you that a man's job in politics is just as stressful as a woman's.'

When she was elected, she gave a speech to women: she said that the time had come to be brave... "I wasn't just talking about the role of women. It meant courage in the broadest sense. In the fight against corruption. And to face new challenges".
