In Antarctica, a giant iceberg has broken off and is already moving. The discovery was made thanks to numerous instruments installed by the British Antarctic Survey. However, one of the British scientists says that the breakup of this iceberg is not related to global warming and will not have a major impact on sea level rise.

Although it is difficult to perceive its size, this iceberg is the size of London, with an area of about 1,550 square kilometers. It broke off from the 150-meter-thick layer of Brunt Glacier.

In footage first recorded in 2019, the fissure, dubbed Chasm 1, was significant in size and had been forming for several years.

"It's at the corner of the Antarctic ice sheet, where the ice moves away from the land and stretches out to sea. And we have a research station located on the glacier, where scientific experiments have been done for years. As of last night, we had data from instruments on the glacier that a piece of ice nearly the size of London had broken off," says Professor Dominic Hodgson, a glacier scientist at the British Antarctic Survey.

The British service says this is the second major outage in the area in the past two years. But this is not to worry, as the phenomenon is normal.

"Glaciers around Antarctica are extensions, extensions that swell around it. So they often stretch out to sea and then break off. The latter was acting like this for years. But in 2017 and a little more recently we had a very rapid crack progression. This acceleration of cracks along the glacier made us aware of the possibility of a breakaway. So we increased the intensity of our monitoring of this glacier. It is already one of the most monitored glaciers in Antarctica," says Mr Hodgson.

He insists that this type of development is not caused by climate change.

"Some of the glaciers that break up further north are a result of climate change. But, this is further south. And it's much colder there. So it is not related to changes in atmospheric or oceanic temperatures. The reason it matters is because a very large mass broke off in Antarctica. We see such disconnects periodically. Even our research station was originally located on top of the ice sheet that broke off. "If we hadn't moved it years ago, we would now have a station going out to sea," says Mr Hodgson.

The scientist says the iceberg will not have a dramatic impact on sea level.

The iceberg is expected to be given a name by the United States National Glacier Center.
