The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has said that she expects Ukraine to make a "bold" decision to establish bilateral relations with Kosovo, during a speech on the occasion of marking the Independence Day of Ukraine in Pristina late Friday.

Speaking at this event, organized on August 25 by foreign embassies in Pristina to mark the 32nd anniversary of Ukraine's independence, Osmani said that Kosovo's support for Ukraine "is principled and guided by values deeply rooted in the foundations of our sovereign state".

Ukraine does not recognize the independence of Kosovo, declared in February 2008.

"We expect that Ukraine will return its support to Kosovo as an independent and sovereign state and a natural ally in this region. The war has brought our peoples together and it is now time for bold decisions to establish our bilateral relations", said Osmani.

Yesterday, Ukraine marked the 32nd anniversary of Independence, amid the aggressive war of the Russian invader, which Moscow launched in February 2022. As a result of the war in Ukraine, thousands of people have died, millions more have been displaced and the material damage is increasing.

Kosovo has sheltered dozens of Ukrainian journalists since the beginning of the Russian occupation of Ukraine.

Osmani also said that "Kosovo, unfortunately, has often been used by the narrative of the Russian leadership to justify their attack on the war in Ukraine."

At the end of July, the Government of Kosovo approved the 11th package of European Union sanctions against Russia and Belarus related to the war in Ukraine, proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora (MPJD).

The Ambassador of Ukraine to Serbia, Volodymyr Tolkach, said on August 8 that in Ukrainian society voices are growing more and more for the recognition of the independence of Kosovo, and that a certain number of deputies in the Parliament of Ukraine are supporting the position for the recognition of possible of Kosovo.

However, Tolkach emphasized that Ukraine's position on the recognition of Kosovo remains unchanged, because the issue of "creating and implementing foreign policy in accordance with Ukrainian legislation belongs to the president of Ukraine".

Tolkach made these comments after an interview with the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Ukrainian Parliament, Oleksandr Merezhko, who had said on August 7 that "Ukraine's recognition of Kosovo is being discussed in Kiev."

Toklach said that the leadership of Kosovo "has taken a clear stance on condemning the Russian aggression against Ukraine, especially by sanctioning the aggressor".

He admitted that it is no surprise that voices are growing more and more in Ukrainian society in support of recognizing Kosovo's independence. /Radio Free Europe
