Health authorities are on alert worldwide for those returning from the World Cup in Qatar, as there is a risk of bringing back to their countries "camel flu", a respiratory infection caused by the middle respiratory syndrome virus. Eastern (MERS).

Health officials urge doctors to be especially careful with people who have respiratory symptoms, cough and fever.

MERS was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and is considered deadlier than COVID-19. More than a third of his patients reportedly die, compared to less than 4% of Covid patients.

Patients can become infected after close contact with camels or by consuming camel-derived products, e.g. unpasteurized camel milk.

Experts also warn that there is a risk of "person-to-person transmission".

The warnings come after an increase in the number of MERS cases around the world. According to UKHSA figures, 2,600 laboratory-confirmed cases of MERS-CoV and 935 associated deaths were reported worldwide to the World Health Organization (WHO) from April 2012 to October 2022.
