MP Eric Ciotti was elected the new president of the conservative republicans in France. The 57-year-old clearly defeated the group's president in the Senate, Bruno Retailleau, in the second round.

Eric Ciotti received 53.7 percent of the votes, announced the commanding chairperson of the party Annie Genevard. The outgoing president of former president Nicolas Sarkozy's party, Christian Jacob, resigned at the end of June. Ciotti belongs to the very conservative wing of the party and takes a hard line on immigration policy. This 57-year-old politician from the south-east of France is also known as "Monsieur Sécurité". Opponents accuse him of softening the differences between the right and the national right in the past.

Ciotti came out on top in the first round of elections last Sunday. His opponent, 62-year-old liberal-conservative senator Bruno Retailleau, won 46.3% of the vote in the second round. About 91,000 party members were called to vote.

A clear profile is required

Ciotti now faces the challenge of extricating the conservative party immediately from the crisis after its disappointing result in the presidential election and defining a clear substantive line. The Republican candidate in this election, Valérie Pécresse, received only 4.8 percent in the first round of elections in April. The strongest opposition party in France is currently the right-wing Rally National (RN) party around Marine Le Pen.

For the government of President Emmanuel Macron, the crucial issue is whether cooperation with the new leadership of the Les Republicains party is possible. Macron's liberals, having lost their absolute majority in the National Assembly in June's legislative elections, now depend on opposition votes. The Republican parliamentary group is divided on this issue.

Alliance with Wauquiez

During the election campaign, Ciotti had tried to convince party members of a double alliance: with him at the head of the party, they would simultaneously take Laurent Wauquiez, head of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, as the next candidate for president. "You are the natural hope of the right (...), I will help you make that happen," Ciotti said in a joint appearance.

During his long career as an MP, Ciotti once managed to pass a law bearing his name. This law provided for the reduction of social assistance for the parents of absent students and was repealed after three years. Among other things, Ciotti recommends the introduction of France's Christian roots into the Constitution. He also considers a return to compulsory military service meaningful, although the investigative newspaper "Canard Enchaîné" revealed that Ciotti himself had used the help of political friends to avoid joining the army.

During the current legislature, Ciotti made headlines by calling for the tie to be made compulsory in the National Assembly. This call was immediately followed by almost all female MPs of the left Nupes alliance.
