The Police Inspectorate of Kosovo said on Tuesday evening that it has arrested four members of the police, as part of the investigation into an incident in which a member of the Serbian community was injured in the north inhabited by a majority of Serbs.
On Tuesday morning, the police had denied its involvement in the wounding of the Serbian citizen, while on Tuesday afternoon, it said that evidence had been obtained on the suspicions of the possible involvement of a police officer in the shooting and decided to suspend four of its members. .
"After undertaking several investigative actions in coordination with the prosecution, the investigators of the Kosovo Police Inspectorate arrested four police officers today in the evening on suspicion of having committed the criminal offense of "failure to report the criminal offense" and one of them is suspected of the criminal offense of "attempted murder", it is stated in the notification of the Inspectorate, which announced that by the decision of the prosecutor they were ordered to be detained for 48 hours.
The incident happened at a checkpoint of the Kosovo police in the municipality of Zveçan in the north inhabited by a majority of Serbs. The injured is being treated at the North Mitrovica hospital and is out of danger.
The incident prompted the reaction of the American ambassador in Pristina, Jeff Hovenier, who wrote on social networks that "The United States is concerned about the incident in which a Kosovo Serb was shot last night in Zveçan. Kosovo Police officials and institutions must conduct a thorough and credible investigation. We are deeply troubled by the initial denial made without due diligence," he wrote, calling for accountability of those responsible for criminal acts.
The incident was also condemned by the mission of the European Union in Pristina, which called for the institutions of the rule of law to carry out a quick and complete investigation and bring those responsible to justice.
The injured is being treated at the North Mitrovica hospital and is out of danger.
The incident prompted a reaction from officials in Belgrade who accused authorities in Pristina of violence against members of the Serbian community in the troubled area.
The representatives of the four northern municipalities inhabited by Serbian majority, do not recognize the authority of Pristina which has announced for April 23 the elections for the positions of the mayors of these municipalities. The posts have been vacant since November last year when Serbian representatives resigned from their jobs amid tensions due to disagreements with a decision by the government in Pristina to re-register cars with Serbian license plates to those of the Republic of Kosovo.
Lista Serbe, the main political entity of Kosovo Serbs, refuses to participate in the elections and on Thursday is expected to meet in Raška, Serbia with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and the government of Serbia to discuss, as has been said, the security situation, license plates of cars, the arrests of Serbs and the elections in the north of Kosovo. The Serbian president said that the discussions will focus on drafting a common platform about the situation in the north of Kosovo.
A number of non-governmental organizations have pointed out that the current circumstances do not allow the holding of the elections in the north, which were originally scheduled for December 18 of last year, to be postponed to April 23 of this year.
