Five people have been found alive after being trapped for a week inside a flooded cave in Laos following heavy rain and landslides.

According to rescue teams from Laos, two other people who were with them are still missing, the BBC reports.

The seven people, from the central province of Xaysomboun, entered the cave last Wednesday in search of gold deposits and wildlife. They were unable to escape after the cave entrance was blocked by flooding and landslides.

Footage released by rescue teams shows divers wading through narrow, muddy corridors, almost completely filled with water.

Bounkham Luanglath from the organization "Rescue Volunteer for People" told the Associated Press that the search for the two missing people will continue.

According to rescuers, the cave system lies deep underground and is extremely narrow, with some rooms only about 50 centimeters wide.

"We found five people alive and all are safe," the organization announced in a post on social media. "Two other people are still being sought."

Thai rescuer Kengkach Bangkawong stated on Facebook that the residents were found around 4:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Finnish specialist diver Mikko Paasi said earlier that rescue teams faced narrow passages, flooded waters, the risk of collapse and polluted air inside what he described as an "abandoned gold mine."

He estimated that the group was trapped about 300 meters from the cave exit.

The cave is located about 120 kilometers north of the capital Vientiane.

One of the local rescuers, identified as Baeng for security reasons, told Agence France-Presse that the area is not owned by anyone and local residents often enter there to look for food or dig holes in search of minerals.

Kengkach Bangkawong was also part of the team that rescued 12 Thai boys and their football coach, who were trapped for two weeks in a flooded cave in Chiang Rai province in 2018.

The extraordinary rescue operation involved more than 10,000 experts from around the world and attracted global attention. The event later became the subject of several films and documentaries, including Thirteen Lives and the documentary The Rescue.
