Spanish police have conducted searches at the headquarters of the Socialist Party in Madrid, as part of an investigation into suspicions of financial irregularities and corruption, international media report.

According to the Spanish Civil Guard, the action was carried out by court order, with the aim of securing materials related to an investigation by the National Court into a former party member, who is suspected of involvement in corrupt affairs related to a state-owned company.

The checks constitute another blow to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's Socialist Party, which has been at the center of a series of corruption scandals for months.

Just last week, another court announced it was investigating former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero for influence peddling and other possible criminal offenses related to the bailout of an airline. Zapatero has denied the charges.

Meanwhile, Pedro Sánchez's wife and brother are also under investigation for accusations related to influence peddling, accusations that they have also denied.

One of the most serious issues for the Socialists is related to the investigations into a former minister in the Sánchez government and a senior party official, suspected of involvement in a bribery scheme that allegedly began during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pedro Sánchez, who has led the Spanish government since 2018, has described the investigations into his family members as a "smear campaign", but has previously also publicly "apologized" for the scandals involving his former political associates.
