Nearly 500,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the war in Ukraine -

New intelligence data shows that since the start of the war in Ukraine, almost 500,000 Russian soldiers have been killed.

Anne Keast-Butler, head of the British intelligence agency GCHQ, said this shows Vladimir Putin is "stepping back on the battlefield".

Keast-Butler said Russia is "escalating its daily hybrid activity" against Britain and Europe and is relentlessly targeting critical infrastructure, democratic processes, supply chains and public trust.

She said GCHQ is "working relentlessly" with intelligence and defence partners to "weaken and reduce the Russian threat".

“A particular area of focus for us is protecting data and energy passing through critical cables and pipelines in and around British waters, we do this by uncovering Russia’s intentions, motives and submarine capabilities,” said Keast-Butler.

"We are also disrupting Russia's efforts to smuggle Western technology, stopping cyberattacks, and countering reckless sabotage and assassination attempts," she added.
