An Alabama inmate and a guard have been wanted by police since last week.

A statement from the Alabama Sheriff's Office said other inmates had talked about the nature of the relationship between inmate Casey White and guard Vicky White. He is suspected of murder and if convicted, faces the death penalty. He was placed in the Lauderdale County Detention Center awaiting trial.

White and the guard disappeared when she was accompanying him to court for an assessment of his mental health. But she did not actually take him there, as no appointment had been scheduled either.

Police suspect that there was a romantic connection between the prisoner and the guard.

They disappeared on Friday, when it was supposed to be her last day at work. She recently sold her house and told colleagues she plans to spend more time on the beach. Police now believe the guard helped organize the escape after violating prison protocol to take the inmate to court himself.

"Investigators received information from inmates at the Lauderdale County Detention Center that there was a special relationship between guard Vicky White and inmate Casey White. This information was confirmed to us by independent sources, "said Sheriff Rick Singleton.

U.S. authorities say the fugitive couple was last seen on Friday. They were driving a Ford Edge with an Alabama license plate. Authorities say Casey White should be considered armed and extremely dangerous as he may now have access to an AR-15 rifle and a shotgun.

"He has nothing to lose," the sheriff said.

The White Guardian is currently using cash and has turned off her cell phone, the sheriff said, adding that the U.S. Secret Service is helping to track her financial records. Chris Connolly, a district attorney in Lauderdale, told reporters he had great faith in fugitive Vicky White.

"She was the best employee, our best man. "That's why it's all shocking," he commented.

In September 2020, Casey White was charged with stabbing 58-year-old Connie Ridgeway to death.

He was already in jail for a string of violent crimes in 2015, including theft, vehicle theft and police pursuit. He allegedly admitted the murder, but later pleaded not guilty and said he did so because of his mental state.
