Air pollution causes the death of more than 1,200 people under the age of 18 in Europe every year, according to the European Environment Agency (EEA).

"Children are particularly vulnerable to air pollution, from the time they are in the womb to adulthood," the Copenhagen-based agency said, adding that polluted air puts children at higher risk of developing chronic diseases. even in adulthood.

EEA experts said that emissions from transport, industry and heating should decrease faster.

A practical measure is to improve air quality in schools and kindergartens, for example by creating more green spaces.

According to the data in the report, in fact, a little more than 10% of green surfaces are located within a radius of 300 meters from schools. Only 6% of structures are covered with trees.

Schools with the greenest environment are generally found in Northern European countries.

"Despite improvements in recent years, levels of major pollutants in many European countries remain above the limits recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO)," according to the EEA report.
