At least five people were injured in a fire that broke out Friday morning in a 21-story building in Berlin, with one woman forced to jump from a window to reach a firefighter who was two floors below.
The fire broke out at around 6:30 a.m. local time in the Friedrichshain district of the German capital. According to the Daily Mail, it started in an apartment on the 11th floor and then spread to the 12th.
Video from the scene shows a woman exiting the apartment and standing on a narrow ledge of the building, about 35 feet above the ground.
A short distance from where the woman is, flames can be seen coming out of a window, while thick smoke has gathered on the facade of the building.
Initially, the woman tries to hold on to the outside of the building and climb down to a firefighter, who is about two floors below in the basket of a ladder truck.
As she tries to get down, her feet slip and she finds she can't reach the basket safely. Finally, she lets herself fall towards the firefighter, who manages to catch her like a ball.
With the turntable ladder reaching only as high as the 9th floor, a woman trapped on the 11th floor had to jump into a rescue basket measuring just 1–2 square meters after a blaze broke out on August 14 in Berlin's Friedrichshain district, near Ostbahnhof train station. pic.twitter.com/L1HmavezQL
