Belgian prosecutors investigating a corruption scandal that has rocked the European Parliament carried out new checks on Friday and questioned a lawmaker whose immunity was lifted last week.
Prosecutors said in a statement that a member of the European Parliament, who they identified only by the initials MT, but who a source with knowledge of the case said was Marc Tarabella, was arrested on Friday morning.
Belgian authorities searched Mr Tarabella's home in Anthisnes in eastern Belgium, the town hall and a safe at a bank in the city of Liege.
The judge overseeing the case is expected to decide on Friday whether Mr. Tarabella will face possible charges, prosecutors said. Mr. Tarabella denies any wrongdoing.
Greek MEP Eva Kaili, former Italian MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, as well as two other people, are in custody in Belgium on charges of corruption and money laundering related to payments they allegedly received from Qatar and Morocco.
Mr. Panzeri has agreed to cooperate with the Belgian authorities in exchange for a reduced sentence. Ms. Kaili has not accepted the charges. Qatar and Morocco have denied having given money.
Mr. Tarabella's lawyer has said that the MEP had visited Qatar twice and had been completely transparent about these trips with a focus on human and labor rights and freedom of expression.
The European Parliament last week removed the immunity of Mr. Tarabella and the Italian Andrea Cozzolino. Through their lawyers, they have denied having committed a violation and said that they are ready to answer the questions of the Belgian authorities./ VOA
