The mystery of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann

Portuguese police have resumed the search for Madeleine McCann in the Algarve region, where the then three-year-old British girl disappeared in 2007 from an apartment block while on holiday with her family.

The General Prosecutor's Office said it was conducting investigations in the German city of Braunschweig, where in 2022 German citizen Christian Brueckner was identified as a suspect in the disappearance of the little girl.

The search for the girl will focus on an area between Praia da Luz, and one of the houses where Christian Brueckner lived when McCann disappeared, according to reports from CNN Portugal and German newspaper Bild.

German police said in June 2020 that McCann was presumed dead and that Brueckner was most likely the perpetrator. Brueckner has denied any involvement in the crime. He is currently in prison in Germany for the rape of a 72-year-old woman in the same area of the Algarve.

The last search for McCann was conducted in May 2023, when police searched an inland reservoir in the Algarve, but found nothing.

How did the disappearance of 3-year-old Madeleine McCann shock the world?

It was May 3, 2007, when the lives of Kate and Gerry McCann would change forever. They went on vacation with their three children Madeleine, Amelie and Sean and some of their friends to a tourist resort in Portugal.

In the evenings that followed, the British couple would dine with their friends at a restaurant 50 meters away from where they were staying. The families would take turns going and checking on their children throughout the night.

On one of these nights, the children are put to bed, but their door was left open by Kate and Garry. After returning from dinner, Garry notices that the position of the bedroom door is different from other nights.

He enters the room and sees his three children sleeping peacefully. He returns to the restaurant, but stops to chat with someone on the way. Kate finishes eating and returns to the room. She notices that the door to the children's bedroom is wide open, but as she goes to close it a little, a gust of wind blows it open. She sees that the window is open and the shutters are up, while 3-year-old daughter Madeline is missing.

The parents raise the alarm about her disappearance and notify the police.

Border police and airport staff were put on alert and hundreds of volunteers joined the effort to find the missing girl over the following days, the case quickly becoming a sensation.

The question of what happened to Madeleine McCann is one that has haunted her family, detectives and the world for more than 18 years. Unfortunately, it is also one that has remained unanswered.

On May 5, 2007, Portuguese police revealed that they believed Madeleine had been abducted from her room and could still be alive somewhere in Portugal.

Police questioned a suspect and also searched his home, but when no evidence was found linking him to Madeleine, this lead was quickly dropped.

In June 2007, a Portuguese police officer admitted that vital evidence that could have helped find Madeleine may have been lost because the scene of the incident was not properly preserved.

Exactly 100 days after Madeleine's disappearance, Portuguese detectives admitted for the first time that the 3-year-old may not be found alive.

Then, almost a year later, in July 2008, with no answers or new leads to explain what happened to Kate and Gerry's eldest child, the Portuguese police shelved the case.

After desperate pleas from the family, Scotland Yard agreed to look into the case at the request of then Home Secretary Theresa May in 2011.

That same year, exactly four years after their daughter's disappearance, the McCanns published a book titled Madeleine. The book put the story back in the spotlight and prompted then-Prime Minister David Cameron to ask authorities to look into the case.

In 2012, British police revealed that they believed Madeleine could still be alive. They also released this image of what she would have looked like at the age of nine. In October 2016, the team of police investigating the case was cut from 29 to just four police officers.

But the operation was still ongoing and in 2020, police revealed that a German paedophile currently in prison was the main suspect, Christen Buckner. Police in Germany continue to claim they have “concrete evidence” that Madeleine is dead, but this has yet to be confirmed and their investigation is ongoing, with Brueckner suspected of involvement in the McCann case.

The suspect was reportedly seen near the area where the little girl disappeared. He received a call on May 3, 2007, about an hour before the 3-year-old disappeared.

He is believed to have resided in Portugal between 1995 and 2007 and spent time living in his van there not far from the resort of Praia da Luz. Already in prison in Germany for the rape and murder of a 72-year-old woman, he has now also been charged with numerous sex offences, which are alleged to have taken place between 2000 and 2007.

Jim Gamble, a former detective who investigated the case, says there is plenty of reason to be optimistic that this matter may finally be solved.
