Lee Jae-myung wins South Korea's presidential election!

The center-left opposition candidate, Lee Jae-myung, winner of the presidential election held today in South Korea, vowed to "not disappoint the people's expectations" and to ensure that the president's duty is to unite citizens.

“ I respect the great decision of the people,” Li told reporters as he left his home to attend parliament. “I will do my best to fulfill the great responsibility and mission entrusted to me, so as not to disappoint the people’s expectations, ” he added, as his supporters cheered around him.

"We will make sure there is no more coup," like the one that led to the announcement of early elections, he stressed.

Arriving at parliament, addressing supporters, Lee Jei-myung said he would find a way for the country to coexist with North Korea through dialogue and communication. “We will build peace without war,” he promised.

Li also pledged that "from day one" in the presidency he would work to revive the country's economy.

Opposing candidate, conservative Kim Moon-su, at a brief press conference in Seoul, admitted defeat and said he had warmly congratulated Lee.

The snap elections were held after former President Jun Suk Jeol's attempt to impose martial law.

With 70% of votes counted, Lee Jei-myung won 48.53% of the vote, according to the National Election Commission. Turnout reached 79.4%, the highest level in the past 28 years.
