Minute by minute/ What is happening with Venezuela after the arrest of President

The United States has launched a sensational attack against several targets in Venezuela, including military bases in the country.

US President Donald Trump said the US military had "captured Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores and removed them from the country", in an action carried out "in coordination with the US justice administration".

A press conference to explain the details of the operation is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. local time from Trump's Mar-a-Lago, Florida, residence. Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez addressed the country in a message on state television and said she was asking the United States for "immediate confirmation of the state of life of President Maduro and the first lady." According to Rodríguez, the operation resulted in the deaths of government, military and civilian officials. Meanwhile, internal sources in the Venezuelan opposition have told international media that Maduro's departure was "negotiated" by him.

Maduro has been accused by the United States of running a "narco-state" and of rigging the election that brought him to power. The Venezuelan leader, who took power after Hugo Chávez, has responded by accusing the United States of wanting to seize Venezuela's oil reserves, the world's largest.

Trump, who ordered the attack, had in recent weeks mentioned the possibility of ground attacks against Venezuela in the name of a "war on drug cartels" and had declared that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's days were "numbered."

Objectives: Parliament and Chávez's mausoleum

The attack, which Trump described as “large-scale,” caused loud explosions starting at 2 a.m. local time (7 a.m. in Italy) in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, and other areas of the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira, where the government confirmed that several military bases had been hit. Colombian President Gustavo Petro shared, shortly after the attack, a list of targets hit: among them in Caracas are the headquarters of the Parliament and the Cuartel de la Montaña, where the mausoleum of Hugo Chávez is located, a place of great symbolism. According to Petros, and according to several testimonies on social networks, Fuerte Tiuna, the country’s main military complex, as well as the La Carlota air base in the center of the capital, were also hit in Caracas. Before Trump’s announcement of Maduro’s capture, Petro had also announced the launch of a military defense plan for the Miraflores presidential palace.

“Do të mbrohemi”, deklaroi qeveria e Karakasit.

Po bombardojnë me raketa.

Sipas CNN-it, disa lagje të Karakasit kanë mbetur pa energji elektrike.

Përshkallëzimi i tensioneve mes Trumpit dhe Venezuelës

Tensions between the U.S. and Venezuelan governments have been high for weeks, and the U.S. military has targeted vessels suspected of being used by drug traffickers in recent days. President Trump said Monday that the United States had destroyed a docking area used by vessels accused of being involved in drug trafficking in Venezuela, the first U.S. ground attack on Venezuelan territory. According to U.S. military officials quoted by CBS, Trump had approved the plan for today's attack days ago. The possibility of carrying out the mission on Christmas Day had been considered, but U.S. airstrikes in Nigeria against Islamic State targets took priority, the sources said.

On Friday, Venezuela had said it was open to negotiating a deal with the United States to combat drug trafficking. However, Maduro said — in a pre-recorded interview broadcast on Thursday — that the United States aims to impose a change of government in Venezuela and secure access to its vast oil reserves through a months-long pressure campaign that began with a massive military deployment in the Caribbean Sea last August.
