Over the past decade, the number of active armed conflicts has increased significantly.

Many of them have been extremely deadly. But some other conflicts have remained below the threshold of violence — yet, if they were to erupt openly, they would upend their respective regions and the world order.

China vs. Taiwan
Will Xi Jinping try to make history? Chinese leaders have watched Russia’s war in Ukraine and perhaps learned some grim lessons about the difficulties of military conquest. But the vast disparity in military capabilities between China and Taiwan means that Beijing could be tempted to act if American support for the island appears to be weakening, or if the economic cost of an attack falls. For now, a blockade seems more likely than an invasion, although even that carries significant risks, including military intervention and economic retaliation from the United States and its allies.

India vs. Pakistan
The two nuclear-armed arch-enemies were recently brought back from the brink of war after a deadly clash — but their core conflict remains unresolved. In April 2025, an attack in India that killed 26 tourists triggered the most serious crisis in years, with cross-border clashes and more than 50 deaths along the Line of Control in Kashmir before a ceasefire was declared.

India’s rapid economic growth is widening the gap in conventional military power. With a fifth of the world’s population between them, maintaining peace in 2026 is critically important. Two factors will make that harder: America, which often mediates between the two countries, has cooled relations with India over a tariff war. And in the latest clash, India and Pakistan showed less restraint than in the past.

Russia vs. Ukraine
Russia’s losses are now estimated to be greater than those of the United States in World War II. Its forces have occupied only 1.3% of Ukraine’s additional territory as of December 2022. This math of attrition suggests that 2026 will bring either extremely slow progress, a conflict frozen by exhaustion, or some kind of agreement. But two other scenarios are also possible: a collapse of the Ukrainian front or political front, aided by Kremlin sabotage; or a collapse of the Russian economy, if air strikes cripple its oil industry. Either scenario would have massive consequences for Europe and the world.

Israel vs. Hamas

Will the fragile ceasefire last?

Venezuela
In its renewed focus on security in “our hemisphere,” the Trump administration has been massing forces against Venezuela, expanding military exercises and striking small boats it claims are smuggling drugs. The ultimate goal may be to hasten the end of Nicolás Maduro’s regime, though it is unclear how much force America is willing to use.

Air strikes are more likely than an amphibious invasion. Trump could even send in special forces if he sees an opportunity to capture or kill Mr. Maduro. The Venezuelan president has no shortage of enemies. He has recently escalated Venezuela’s centuries-old claim to two-thirds of neighboring Guyana’s territory — the oil-rich Essequibo region. Despite orders from the International Court of Justice not to do so, Venezuela held illegal gubernatorial elections in May 2025 for “Guyana Essequibo,” electing administrators for territories it does not control.

But any move by Venezuela towards Guyana would surely cause a confrontation with the United States./ Source: The Economist/Adapted by Gazeta Si
