The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Ivica Dacic , said that the duty of KFOR is to "disable the unilateral acts of Pristina", and "not to prevent the employees from entering the municipal buildings ".
"Now they are guarding the mayors under the pretext of maintaining peace. It seems that they are protecting them from the owners of the facilities, the Serbs, from those who work there, who are employed there. They cannot be mayors in Serbian municipalities, where the Serbs did not elect them," said Dacic for Radio-Television of Serbia.
He added that the armed forces of Serbia are in a state of readiness.
Serbian authorities have decided that their armed forces will remain at the highest level of readiness until further notice, due to the situation in northern Kosovo. On May 29, groups of local Serbs are protesting in the north, opposing the new Albanian mayors of Leposavic, Zubin Potok and Zvecan.
In addition to members of the Kosovo Police, in the north there is an increased presence of members of the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR. KFOR has prevented Serbs from approaching municipal buildings in the north of Kosovo.
The Kosovo Police announced that the protests in the north are continuing. The international community has blamed the Government in Pristina for increasing tensions in the north. On May 26, in the northern municipalities, local Serbs clashed with the Kosovo Police, as the latter assisted the new mayors to enter the municipal offices. Their entry into the municipal buildings by the international factor was described as "forced entry" and the Government of Kosovo was asked not to take "unilateral and destabilizing steps".
However, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has stated that he understands the concerns of international partners, but "any other option would be non-fulfillment of constitutional obligations".
Local elections in the north were held on April 23, after last November, the heads of the four northern municipalities, from Lista Serbe, the largest party of Kosovo Serbs, resigned. This party abandoned all the institutions of Kosovo, due to the decision of the Government in Pristina to carry out the process of re-registration of cars with illegal Serbian license plates. The elections were boycotted by the Serbian majority population in that area, which now does not accept the results, namely the new mayors./ rel
