Scientists Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar Yaghi won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing a whole new form of molecular architecture, producing materials that could help address challenges such as climate change and the shortage of drinking water.

The three laureates worked to create molecular constructs with large spaces through which gases and other chemicals can flow and that could be used to collect water from desert air, capture carbon dioxide or store toxic gases. They are called metal organic frameworks.

One of the scientists, Kitagawa, expressed his deep gratitude for the recognition, while the three winners will share the $1.2 million prize.

Their work is about how molecules can be built together into structures.

The Nobel committee has called it "molecular architecture." This is the third science prize to be awarded this week, while winners in physics and medicine were announced earlier.
