Merz secures coalition for government: Germany will have a strong and effective
Friedrich Merz

Germany's conservatives CDU/CSU under potential future chancellor Friedrich Merz agreed to a coalition deal with the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) on Wednesday with the aim of reviving Europe's largest economy just as a global trade war threatens recession.

The deal follows weeks of bargaining between Merz and the SPD, which came first in elections held in February but failed to win a majority as the far-right AfD party climbed to second place, The Guardian writes.

At a coalition press conference in Berlin, which he opened, Merz said the coalition has "a strong plan" as a result of the negotiations, which will send "a clear signal" to both Germans and European partners that "Germany will have a strong and effective government."

Investment, migration, security are among the top priorities, Merz said.

Presenting the outline of the agreement reached, Merz talks about his focus on bringing in more investment with changes to corporate and energy taxes and incentives that boost the economy.

He then moves on to migration policy, promising "a new course" with a series of stricter policies aimed at "putting an end to irregular migration" through stricter border controls, tightening asylum rules, and pushing for the repatriation of those who have entered Germany illegally.
