Russian Mindset After Crimea Invasion: Kiev Is Preparing to Retake the Peninsula

Igor Girkin, a former Russian Army officer and one of the key figures in Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, has stated from his prison cell that Ukraine's recent massive drone campaign against targets in occupied Crimea could be preparation for a military offensive aimed at retaking the peninsula.

In a post on Telegram, Girkin said that ongoing Ukrainian attacks against energy infrastructure, industrial facilities, logistics centers and military targets in Crimea are "setting the stage" for amphibious and ground operations by Ukrainian forces.

According to him, the intensification of strikes on strategic targets aims to weaken Russian defense capabilities ahead of a possible operation to regain control of Crimea.

Girkin, also known by the nickname "Strelkov," played a key role in the annexation of Crimea and the subsequent conflict in the Donbass region. He was arrested in Russia in 2023 after publicly criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin's strategy in the war against Ukraine.

His statements have not been confirmed by Ukrainian authorities, however, and there is no public evidence to suggest that Kiev has launched or is preparing a ground offensive to retake Crimea. However, Ukraine has significantly increased drone and missile attacks on military and logistical targets on the peninsula in recent months, aiming to weaken Russian capabilities in the region.
