The horror of high temperatures: Over 1,000 victims in a few days (and the worst

Over 1,000 people have died as a result of extreme temperatures in Spain, as the country recorded its hottest first six months on record, according to authorities.

The Carlos III Health Institute reported that 1,028 heat-related deaths were recorded in June, more than double the 407 cases reported in the same period last year. This is also the highest number of heat-related deaths in June since 2015.

The peak of the heatwave was reached on June 23, when around 73 percent of Spain's population was exposed to high health risks.

Spain's National Meteorological Agency (AEMET) announced that June was the second hottest month ever recorded in the country, with an average temperature 3.2 degrees Celsius above normal.

The heatwave has engulfed much of Europe, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in France, Germany and also in the Balkans. The World Health Organization estimates that over 1,300 people have died on the continent as a result of the extreme temperatures.

WHO Regional Director for Europe, Hans Kluge, said current conditions are a "dress rehearsal" for a future where heatwaves will become more frequent, stronger and longer lasting, with Europe warming at more than twice the global average.

He warned that the lack of proper preparation for extreme heat events could lead to a significant increase in deaths, especially among the most vulnerable groups such as the elderly, workers working outdoors and people with chronic diseases.
