European nuclear defense, Macron: We have to start thinking even without the

After the exit of Great Britain from the European Union, the only nuclear power on the continent is France.

Recently, due to the war in Ukraine and the possibility of the return of the former president Donald Trump to the White House, the head of the Elysée Emmanuel Macron has proposed to lead the common European nuclear defense.

He has emphasized earlier the leading role of France in the new security architecture in Europe.

"I am ready to open this debate, which must include defense against long-range missiles and nuclear weapons. Let's put it all on the table and see what we need for the protective umbrella. "France is ready to contribute more to the common European defense," Macron said.

France, which has around 300 nuclear warheads, is the only nuclear power in the European Union.

The French president has in recent weeks adopted an increasingly tough line against Russia over its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and it is not the first time he has suggested using France's nuclear weapons to defend the EU.

Macron first hinted at the possible move in 2020, when he called for a "strategic dialogue" on "the role of France's nuclear deterrent in Europe's collective security", in a bid to open discussions on the issue with Germany, which hosts American nuclear weapons.

France then repeated the offer in 2022. So far, Berlin has not accepted.

But in January, Manfred Weber, leader of the centre-right European People's Party (EPP) and a member of the Bavarian CSU, which is currently part of the German opposition, said Europe should "take Macron's offer" into account. of building the "European dimension of nuclear defense as a long-term goal".

Building a European common defense policy has long been a French objective, but has faced opposition from other EU countries, which consider the NATO umbrella more reliable.
