Indonesian authorities on Wednesday ordered hundreds of islanders to evacuate immediately after eruptions at a volcano, raising fears that lava could end up in the sea and cause a tsunami.

The 725-meter-high "Mountain" Ruang, on the island of the same name, has erupted at least 5 times since Tuesday evening, spewing lava and volcanic smoke that rises thousands of meters into the air.

Agency chief Hendra Gunawan said officials had raised the alert for the volcano to the highest level, warning people not to go within 6 kilometers of the crater, amid fears the mountain could partially collapse into water and trigger a tsunami.
