French President Emmanuel Macron said Friday he was still open to talks with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, if that would help bring lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.

Macron and Putin enjoyed a good working relationship before Russia launched its invasion of its neighbor in February 2022.

Macron's diplomatic efforts in the weeks before the fighting began failed to prevent war, but he had kept the line of communications with the Russian president open for months.

Their diplomatic and personal relations deteriorated greatly as the war continued. Earlier this year, Macron considered the possibility of stripping Putin of France's highest medal of honor.

Putin was asked on Thursday during a conference with journalists about his positions on France and Macron.

Putin said: "In an instant, the French president ended relations with us. We didn't do it, I didn't do it. He did it. If there is interest, we are ready. If not, we will make it."

Speaking in Brussels on Friday at the end of a summit of EU leaders, Macron said he was open to dialogue with Putin to find a peaceful solution if the Russian leader contacted him.

"I did not start the war unilaterally, violating the agreements I had signed. And it was not France that decided to commit war crimes in the north of Ukraine, making the talks impossible," said Macron.

He added that "we must be serious" and that "I have not changed the number".

The French leader underlined that, if Putin shows willingness to start the dialogue for the construction of long-term peace, France is ready to help.

But Putin said this week that there will be no peace until Russia achieves its goals, which he says remain unchanged after nearly two years of fighting in Ukraine. / REL
