European leaders have decided to open EU membership talks with Ukraine and Moldova and give Georgia candidate status.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the decision taken at a summit in Brussels as "a victory" for his country and Europe.

A spokesman for Charles Michel, President of the European Council, said the agreement was unanimous.

A press conference in Brussels about this is expected to be held later.

"This is a victory for Ukraine. A victory for all of Europe. A victory that motivates, inspires and strengthens," Zelensky said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
