“Kiev has been forgotten.” The exultation of the well-known tabloid “Moskovskij Komsomolets” is worth a summary of the situation.
Under the headline, an article that brings together Vladimir Putin's birthday phone call to Donald Trump, greetings "on behalf of the American people" from Secretary of State Marco Rubio for Russia Day, a message missing since 2021, and the transfer of anti-drone systems from the domestic front to the Middle East.
The moral is always the same. "Finally, it has been decided that we will be left to deal with Kiev. And with Europe."
There is still no line set by the Kremlin on how to deal with the potential benefits that could flow from the conflict between Israel and Iran.
The only common point of failure is the current decline in international attention to Military Special Operations. In particular, that of America. Now everything is read in the light of the new relationship with the US.
Political scientist Malek Dudakov believes that the war between Israel and Iran offers the potential for improving relations between the United States and Russia.
"They need us: on a military level, the United States supports Israel, but there is a division in their society, as well as within the Republican Party. Many are asking their leader not to get involved. For this reason, Vladimir Putin's mediation is not just helpful, but a necessity to avoid an escalation that would force Trump to act."
In our interest
A possible intervention in the Middle East negotiations is in no way interpreted as a useful act to restore Russia's international prestige, for the simple reason that the state media has always been diligent in underlining Putin's centrality in an anti-Western way. The only interpretation of this new conflict is simply 'will it be so'."
It doesn't really matter that Iran is a historic ally with whom a military cooperation pact was renewed six months ago.
"As long as we talk about global politics, our diplomacy is obliged to do one thing: to act only in the exclusive interests of Russia."
This is what Mikhail Rostovsky, one of the most vocal voices of the so-called "hawk party," wrote.
"Don't think about Iran, not about Israel, not about Europe, not about America. But only about Russia. We are talking about people and countries that are not completely foreign to us, but this is an absolutely foreign war to us. And we should think only about ourselves. Period."
Hands free
And here we go back to the original title. To the Russian interest, which consists of having free hands in a Ukraine far from everyone's thoughts.
“In theory, after the war between Iran and Israel, Volodymyr Zelensky can only be found before Putin’s icy gaze and the face distorted by the anger of the Ukrainian people,” writes Sergey Markov, lyrical and cynical at the same time, although the former Kremlin foreign affairs consultant later declares that “for moral and human reasons” Putin will try with his mediation proposals to ensure peace in the Middle East.
Economist Mikhail Khazin, a name that is sure to appear on the agendas of propaganda shows, believes that this conflict will inevitably weaken and perhaps even end Western support for Ukraine.
"And Russia will not miss the opportunity to use the situation to strengthen its positions. Forced to choose between helping Ukraine and helping Israel, the US will unhesitatingly support the latter."
The Great Exchange
Even in the ultranationalist galaxy, we always come back to Trump and the possible exchange between the two conflicts. “Today more than ever,” writes the website “Tsargrad,” “the American president may aim for an accelerated conclusion to the Ukrainian war, as the White House is unable to simultaneously manage two major clashes with mediators. Trump intends to involve Putin in resolving the escalation in the Middle East, and in exchange, the United States will allow Moscow to end the Special Operation on our terms.”
Rumors are circulating about possible political asylum already granted to Ayatollah Khamenei and his closest associates.
But for now, the Kremlin is silent. It is also for this reason that it is curious that the only "authorized" comment, as it comes from the state-run RIA Novosti agency, is devoted to another obsession of the Russian government.
"It is clear that all attempts to limit our diplomatic influence have failed convincingly: for those who will make the next decisions on the great international chessboard, what the European Union says has ceased to have any importance or meaning."/ Corriere della Sera
