Hamas leader: We are close to reaching a ceasefire agreement with Israel

The leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, has stated that they are close to an agreement on a ceasefire with Israel.

Hamas officials are "close to reaching a ceasefire agreement" with Israel and the group has responded to Qatari mediators, Ismail Haniyeh said in a statement to Reuters.

Haniyeh did not reveal more details but an official of the group told Al Jazeera TV that the negotiations were focused on how long the ceasefire would last, agreements to send aid to Gaza and the exchange of Israeli hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners. in Israel.

The official said both sides would release the women and children and details would be announced by Qatar, which is mediating the negotiations.

Hamas took about 240 hostages during its October 7 attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people. Talk of an imminent hostage deal has been circulating for days.

Reuters reported last week that Qatari mediators were seeking a deal for Hamas and Israel to exchange 50 hostages in return for a three-day ceasefire that would prompt emergency aid shipments to Gaza civilians, citing an official briefed on the talks.
