Kosovo's acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, has expressed his country's willingness to host asylum seekers rejected by the United Kingdom, in exchange for support in the field of security.

Kurti, who is in London for the Berlin Process Summit, told the British daily newspaper The Times that "we want to help the United Kingdom."

"We see this as our friendly and political duty. We have limited capacities, but we want to help and, as we speak, there is regular communication between our teams of state officials from our Ministry of Internal Affairs and lawyers on how to make this process as smooth and beneficial as possible for both sides," Kurti stressed.

He added that, in return, Kosovo would like to "mainly receive support in the field of security, whether through strategic agreements, or through equipment and projects that we can implement."

"Of course, we want to benefit as a country, but we consider it, first and foremost, our duty to help you, because you have helped us a lot and we will never forget this," he underlined.

Months ago, the acting government of Kosovo expressed openness to talks with Britain about building centers to house asylum seekers rejected by this country.

But this is the first time she has openly offered that she is ready for this, and Kurti made these comments a day before the summit to be led by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and in which he will participate.

Earlier this year, Human Rights Watch (HRW) called on the United Kingdom and the European Union not to use the Balkans as a "warehouse for migrants."

Michael Bochenek, from this organization, told REL in June that the Balkans have become the target of such plans by more powerful states for several reasons.

“Balkan countries don’t have a truly horrific history of human rights violations [compared to other countries that have been used for these plans, like Rwanda, South Sudan, Libya],” he says.

Meanwhile, Kosovo recently agreed to host 50 migrants from third countries who were staying in the US, while during October Kosovo was rumored as a possible place to host prisoners from Belgium.

In a similar agreement that also sparked criticism, in 2022, Kosovo and Denmark agreed to lease 300 prison cells at the Correctional Institution in Gjilan to house foreign prisoners who are expected to be deported from Denmark after completing their sentences.

In return, Kosovo will benefit from over 200 million euros, which will be invested in the Correctional Service and renewable energy projects.

The first prisoners from Denmark are expected to be transferred to the prison in Gjilan in the first half of 2027.

Previously, Kosovo had also sheltered around 1,900 Afghan citizens, who were evacuated from Afghanistan after the Taliban returned to power in 2021./ REL
